Hydraulic Wheelset Guiding Bushes

Low stiffness for curves

To ensure smooth and safe rail travel at high speeds, railroad wheels and axles must be set rigidly. However, when the train navigates a curve, they need to yield in order to allow the wheels to adjust. Continental is combining these two functions into one solution, thereby improving train suspension technologies: the Hydraulic Wheelset Guiding Bushes meet the needs for high longitudinal stiffness for straight-line movement and for low longitudinal stiffness for curves. Designed to keep our customers' trains running smoothly and reliably, the hydraulic bushes are able to achieve a factor of up to 15 between static and dynamic stiffness in one radial direction.

In addition, the hydraulic bushes reduce the transmission of vibrations from the tracks to the train body by allowing hydraulic fluid to flow between the chamber and inner as well as outer metal sleeve of the bush. While the metal parts of the bush provide structural support, the hydraulic fluid aids in damping. Key to these damping properties is the fluid movement: the hydraulic fluid absorbs the kinetic energy from vibrations and converts it into heat, which is then dissipated. The advanced design of the bushes ensures that the hydraulic fluid works bilaterally, providing unmatched performance and longevity.

They are built to handle dynamic loads from all sides, making wheelsets and rail tracks more resilient to wear and tear with shorter rail grinding intervals. This enhanced durability means less frequent maintenance and replacement of wheelsets, resulting in lower costs. Furthermore, the hydraulic bushes ensure smooth articulation and reduce the impact of track irregularities thanks to flexibility within the suspension or coupling system. This also enhances the safety of the train by maintaining better control and stability. Passengers benefit from greater comfort as the hydraulic bushes isolate vibrations, which also helps reduce noise levels inside the train.
